THE SWEET HEREAFTER after 20 Years (Vancouver, BC)

March 31, 2017

The critically acclaimed EXOTICA is arguably the film that put Atom Egoyan on the international map in 1993. But it was THE SWEET HEREAFTER that cemented him as a giant of Canadian film. That was all the way back in 1997, before Nunavut had entered Confederation and before Drake had hit puberty. Egoyan’s haunting rural drama won three awards at Cannes (one of two Canadian films to ever win the Grand Jury Prize), four Toronto Film Critics awards, and seven Genie Awards including Best Picture.

The film that Roger Ebert called “an unflinching lament for the human condition” has only grown in esteem since its release twenty years ago. We at REEL CANADA are big fans of Egoyan and THE SWEET HEREAFTER: At least one of our staff considers it the best Canadian film of all time!

We are proud to celebrate this important film on its 20th anniversary by presenting, in partnership with Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), a special screening of THE SWEET HEREAFTER as part of a triple-feature programme at VanCity Theatre in downtown Vancouver.

Atom Egoyan himself is a key part in helping REEL CANADA and VIFF pull off this exciting day at VanCity. To open the day, he has handpicked the 1977 thriller SKIP TRACER, a film that influenced his own filmmaking. SKIP TRACER writer/director Zale Dalen will be in attendance as a guest.

To follow, Atom Egoyan and actor Bruce Greenwood will be on hand for the 20th Anniversary presentation of THE SWEET HEREAFTER and a Q&A after the film. To conclude, Egoyan will introduce EXOTICA, his breakout film and first collaboration with Greenwood, which will cap off the night.

This event is one stop on Egoyan’s very busy schedule surrounding National Canadian Film Day 150 (NCFD 150). On Tuesday night (April 18) and Wednesday morning (April 19), Egoyan will appear at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria where he will screen his most recent film, REMEMBER, and sit down for a chat with the CineVic Society of Independent Filmmakers. Later in the day he will appear via Skype at a Toronto screening of REMEMBER before heading to the big event in Vancouver.

With all this excitement happening, don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of it! Check out our website to find an NCFD 150 event near you!
